Less than 28 weeks gestation
Between the lower limit of viability - roughly 23 weeks gestation - and the 28th week of gestation there is an appreciable mortality and morbidity. Thus, depending on the centre, a 26 week baby has a 50% risk of mortality, with a high morbidity rate.
All babies born before 28 weeks are destined to spend a matter of months on SCBU.
