Insulin-like growth factors

Authoring team

The insulin like growth factors are somatomedins, ie growth factors synthesised in the liver in response to growth hormone. Thus they mediate most of the growth-promoting effects of growth hormone.

The most important of these is IGF-I; there is also IGF II.

In acromegaly the levels of IGFs are increased - however they do not always reflect disease activity.
