Histologic variants

Authoring team

Two histologic variants are described:

  • cystic glandular hyperplasia - hyperplasia of both the epithelial cells lining the glands and the stromal cells. The glands may be greatly dilated and visible to the naked eye on section, giving rise to the description of swiss cheese appearance. Formerly known as metropathica haemorrhagica.

  • adenomatous hyperplasia - active proliferation of the glandular epithelium but not of the stroma. The endometrium shows glands crowded together with little intervening stroma. About 20% progress to endometrial adenocarcinoma.
