Condom (male)

Authoring team

This is the only reversible male method of contraception. It is used by 25% of sexually active males in the UK, and has a failure rate of 3% - mostly due to misuse.

Proper use is essential. It is important for the user to understand that the pre-ejaculatory secretions from the penis are potentially fertile, and that in use, the condom is carefully handled, with air expelled from the teat and careful withdrawal of the penis in plenty of time.

The increase in popularity is due to its use as a device to prevent infection as well as conception. To this end the condom manufacturing industry has done a lot to improve their image from a dull interruption in intercourse to a potential enhancement of the experience. There is a huge range of varieties but these will not be discussed. However, it is important to note that the "safety" varieties include spermicide which can improve their efficacy.
