Coitus interruptus

Authoring team

This is a method of contraception that involves the male withdrawing his penis from the vagina prior to ejaculation.

It is relatively ineffective with many disadvantages:

  • 30% failure rate - due to: - delay in withdrawal - sperm in the pre-ejaculatory fluid
  • high degree of self-control required by both partners
  • intercourse is often unsatisfactory
