Mode of action
- inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase (a topoisomerase) - this enzyme is involved in the supercoiling of DNA, and topoisomerase IV
- DNA gyrase is unique among topoisomerases in its ability to introduce negative supercoils into bacterial DNA - this supercoiling is important for initiation and propagation of DNA synthesis and transcription of mRNA from many genes
This effects results in an impairment of DNA replication and protein synthesis.
