  • DNA gyrase is unique among topoisomerases in its ability to introduce negative supercoils into bacterial DNA - this supercoiling is important for initiation and propagation of DNA synthesis and transcription of mRNA from many genes

This effects results in an impairment of DNA replication and protein synthesis.
