Like all xanthine derivatives, theophylline is an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase and thus inhibits the metabolism of cyclic AMP.
Theophylline is also a competitive inhibitor of the actions of adenosine on A1 and A2 receptors. The role of the latter in the therapeutic action of the drug is unknown.
