GP's prescribe more than the value of their salaries every year, amounting to over 10% of the whole NHS budget and over three-quarters of all NHS prescribing costs.

The 1990 HMSO figures for the most frequently prescribed drugs were for:

  • nervous system 19%
  • cardiovascular system 17%
  • infections 13%
  • respiratory disorders 10%
  • dermatology and rheumatic disorders also significant
