Staphylococcal pneumonia is most commonly seen in patients who have a weakened response to infection. These include:

  • children
  • patients with underlying disease:
    • influenza - relatively common during flu epidemics
    • chronic leukaemia
    • Hodgkin's disease
    • cystic fibrosis
  • patients on steroid therapy

Pneumonia may also arise in staphylococcal septicaemia where puncture sites may introduce infection, e.g.:

  • intravenous drug abusers
  • patients receiving parenteral nutrition through central catheters
