Aetiology
The causes of microangiopathic haemolysis include:
- disseminated intravascular coagulation - microthrombi narrow the microvasculature
- thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura - microthrombi narrow the microvasculature
- haemolytic uraemic syndrome - microthrombi narrow the microvasculature
- malignant hypertension - arterioles become markedly narrowed
- systemic lupus erythematosus - red cells are damaged by the necrotizing arteriolitis
- Kasabach-Merritt syndrome
- paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria
