  • some chronic spinal muscular atrophies may show an identical distribution of proximal muscle weakness and may be differentiated only on the EMG and muscle biopsy

  • polymyositis and dermatomyositis

  • certain metabolic myopathies e.g. adult-onset acid maltase deficiency

  • facio-scapulo-humeral dystrophy

  • Becker and Duchenne muscular dystrophy
