Investigations
- plain abdominal radiography to detect proximal faecal loading
- assessment of the tone of the anal sphincter is up to the proctologist; also neurological control over rectum and anus
- if an anal sphincter problem is suspected, anal manometry and endoanal ultrasound are recommended
