Depressive feelings are very common in adolescence, with up to half of 14 to 15 year olds feeling miserable, a quarter self depreciatory and 8% having suicidal thoughts.

The feelings increase markedly after puberty and show an adult picture, with a greater prevalence in females. Reasons for this may include:- - hormonal changes - greater cognitive maturity - change in social support - more life stresses
