Indications

Authoring team

Zidovudine should be offered to all patients infected with HIV when they develop symptomatic. Its use is now also recommended in asymptomatic but antibody-positive patients in whom markers indicate the risk of disease progression.

Zidovudine does not eradicate HIV from the body, and is therefore not a cure for AIDS. It may however delay disease progression.

Zidovudine is now indicated to reduce the risk of vertical transmission of HIV.
