Alterable properties of ventilation
Ventilation has a variety of properties which may be altered:
- the rate
- the fraction of inspired oxygen, FiO2
- the inspiration time, Ti
- the expiration time, Te, which is itself dependent on the rate and Ti
- the baseline pressure, ie a constant minimum pressure may be set - as in continuous positive airways pressure
- the peak inspiratory pressure, PIP
- the waveform of the inspiration, for example square wave resulting in very rapid attainment of the PIP
