Alterable properties of ventilation

Ventilation has a variety of properties which may be altered:

  • the rate
  • the fraction of inspired oxygen, FiO2
  • the inspiration time, Ti
  • the expiration time, Te, which is itself dependent on the rate and Ti
  • the baseline pressure, ie a constant minimum pressure may be set - as in continuous positive airways pressure
  • the peak inspiratory pressure, PIP
  • the waveform of the inspiration, for example square wave resulting in very rapid attainment of the PIP
