Complications
- joint deformity - valgus or varus - may arise if the fracture was treated conservatively, or operative reduction was incomplete, or the fracture became re-displaced during fixation. Deformity rarely poses problems in the elderly patient but when severe, may predispose to later osteoarthritis in a younger patient
- joint stiffness - preventable by early mobilisation and avoidance of prolonged wearing of casts
- osteoarthritis - except for that consequent upon deformity, is uncommon
