Sacrococcygeal teratoma

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a tumour occuring in the sacrococcygeal region, usually noted at birth or appearing soon after.

It present with a mass, which may be associated with underling vertebral abnormalities, and may ultimately impinge on the function of the gastrointestinal or urinary tract. There is a 10% risk of malignancy, which increases with increasing age of presentation; under 2 months nearly all are said to be benign. About 75% occur in girls.

Investigations should include careful imaging and serum alphafetoprotein and beta HCG levels.

Treatment involves surgical resection.
