HLA matching is an important determinant of graft survival:

  • 1 year graft survival
    • if HLA identical then 95%
    • if one mismatch then 90-95%
    • if complete mismatch 75-80%

Cadaveric grafts have an average half-life of 8 years. This compares to a half-life of 20 years for HLA-identical graft from a living related donor.

Many deaths are from cardiovascular pathology which often is unrelated to transplantation or to immunosuppression.

Transplant related death is most commonly due to infection or malignancy.
