- flaviviruses - includes Japanese encephalitis and, more recently, West Nile virus
- diphtheria
- botulism
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
- acute inflammatory polyneuropathy
- acute transverse myelitis
- acute spinal cord compression
- myasthenia gravis
- spinal cord trauma and infarction
- lead and other heavy metal poisoning (1)
