These are becoming more common. They usually affect homosexual men; although women practising receptive anal intercourse are also at risk.

Some infections in this category include:-


  • anal lesions: herpes simplex, secondary syphilis
  • proctitis: herpes simplex, Neisseria gonorrhoea, Chlamydia trachomatis, syphilis
  • proctocolitis: Chlamydia trachomatis, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter

In HIV-infected individuals, sexually transmitted enteric infections may involve a broader spectrum of organisms.
