A free macrophage is any phagocyte that is capable of free movement to an area of inflammation and infection. In contrast to fixed histiocytes, they are capable of movement out of blood vessels along concentration gradients of inflammatory mediator.
The free macrophage is ovoid in shape during transit but may transform itself with multiple surface projections on encountering passing particles.
