This condition presents with sudden onset of illness in children under a year old, with features as follows:

  • prodome with listlessnes, diarrhoea, vomiting, pyrexia
  • circulatory collapse and shock, which is resistant to normal resuscitation measures
  • encephalopathy - coma, hypotonia, fits
  • acidosis
  • impaired renal and hepatic function
