Fluoxetine

Fluoxetine is a non-sedating highly specific antidepressant which inhibits the re-uptake of serotonin. It is, like fluvoxamine, less cardiotoxic than antidepressants such as amitriptyline and imipramine.

Fluoxetine 20 mg is prescribed initially and it is possible to go up to 60 mg daily.

Side effects include nausea and vomiting.

Fluoxetine has a long half-life of between 26 and 220 hours.

Fluoxetine may be agitating, so is given in the mornings so as not to disturb sleep.
