Inflammatory functions

Authoring team

The coagulation cascade has several functions during inflammation:

  • cessation of haemorrhage which may be secondary to initial physical trauma, microbial or chemical mediator attack
  • factor XII can activate the kinin and fibrinolytic cascades
  • thrombin can activate the complement cascade
  • fibrin peptides, produced from the cleavage of fibrinogen, are chemotactic for leukocytes and increase vascular permeability
  • extravascular fibrin formation may limit the spread of an infective agent
