The prognosis depends on how early the disease is recognised and treated. Untreated Wilson's disease is progressive and fatal. Acute neurological forms and fulminant hepatitis have a high mortality rate. Chronic forms treated early have the best prognosis.
Death is usually from liver failure, variceal haemorrhage, or intercurrent infection.
