Drainable pouches and bags for a stoma have an open end which is held closed with a clamp, clip or soft tie. They are suitable for semi-formed and liquid faeces which would otherwise necessitate the frequent emptying of the bag.

Transparent drainable appliances are always used in the immediate postoperative period for all types of stoma to permit observation and avoid frequent changing.

Drainable appliances are often indicated for the following groups:

  • long-term ileostomy patients
  • some colostomy patients
  • managing fistulae and drainage sites
