Rectosigmoidectomy

Authoring team

The Swenson procedure for Hirschsprung's disease first involves the identification of the level of normal ganglionic tissue. The rectum and left colon are mobilised in order to bring normal bowel down to the perineum. The rectum is intussuscepted through the anus and cleaned.

The mucocutaneous line of the anal canal is then identified and an incision is made in the anterior of the circumference 1.5cm beyond this line. The intussuscepted colon is pulled through until the correct level is visualized. The ganglionic colon is then sutured to the everted anal canal as the bowel is divided and removed. Finally, the anastomosis is returned to the pelvis.

Rectosigmoidectomy is also a surgical option for frail patients with rectal prolapse.
