The main variables in dialysate composition are:

  • sodium concentration - 130 to 140 mM
  • glucose concentration - 1.5 to 6%; 1.5% is approximately isotonic with plasma
  • potassium - if required

Guidelines:

  • both blood pressure and volume are normal or low:
    • 140 mM sodium and 1.5% glucose
  • blood pressure or volume are raised:
    • 135 mM sodium and 3% glucose
  • both blood pressure and volume are raised:
    • 130 mM sodium and 6% glucose

If the metabolic consequences of glucose overload become problematic, substitute another osmotically active solute and/or amend diet.
