Psychological factors seem to be important in the development of IBS and also in the decision to consult a doctor about the condition.

It has been proposed that emotional upset may be expressed as bowel dysfunction - a "somatisation" syndrome.

The decision to consult the doctor depends on learned illness behaviour, health anxiety, social stresses etc.
