Possible indications in children include:

  • bilary atresia where corrective surgery has been delayed beyond 2-3 months, or where surgery has been unsuccessful
  • Wilson's disease
  • tyrosinaemia
  • glycogen storage disease
  • alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
  • primary hepatic malignancy
  • in the treatment of Crigler-Najjar

Possible indications in an adult include:

  • fulminant or subacute liver failure:
    • paracetamol poisoning
    • viral hepatitis
  • end-stage liver cirrhosis:
    • alcoholic liver disease
    • chronic active hepatitis
    • primary biliary cirrhosis
  • primary hepatic malignancy
