Blood tests in Crohn's may reveal the following:

  • full blood count - anaemia due to blood loss and/or vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, increased platelet count which correlates with disease activity, leukocytosis.
  • ESR - elevated
  • elevated CRP: correlates with disease activity. Note that CRP is significantly higher in Crohn's disease than in ulcerative colitis.
  • biochemistry - severe disease may result in
    • hypokalaemia, hyponatraemia, and metabolic acidosis secondary to diarrhoea
    • hypoalbuminaemia secondary to malabsorption
    • abnormal liver function tests if there is associated chronic active hepatitis
