Aetiology
The causes of mechanical intestinal obstruction can be broadly divided into:
- those within the lumen
- those in the bowel wall
- those outside the lumen
Causes vary with respect to site of obstruction, e.g. a stricture caused by ulcerative colitis is not a cause of small bowel obstruction.
