Specific liver viruses
Hepatitis viruses which are transmitted by the faeco-oral route cause a self-limiting disease:
- hepatitis A virus
- hepatitis E virus
Hepatitis viruses which are transmitted parenterally more commonly cause chronic complications:
- hepatitis B virus
- hepatitis C virus
- hepatitis D virus
- GB viruses
No agent can be identified in more than 50% of patients presenting in Britain with acute liver failure that is apparently virally induced.
