Usually this condition spontaneously resolves before the first year of life. In a small proportion of individuals with this condition there may be the development of ulceration in the lower end of the oesophagus due to repeated reflux. This may cause repeated episodes of haematemesis and rarely lead to the development of an oesophageal stricture.
