Management of ascites in cirrhosis

The management of ascites in cirrhosis involves an initial diagnostic paracentesis - 30 to 50 ml of ascitic fluid is withdrawn - which should be performed on hospital admission.
Further management is based on whether presentation is:
- tense ascites
- non-tense ascites
