  • the heparin group suffered non-significantly fewer deaths within 14 days:
    • 9.0% heparin vs. 9.3% no heparin
    • corresponding to 3 fewer deaths per 1000 patients

  • the percentage dead or dependent at 6 months was identical in both groups, at 62.9%

  • heparin treatment significantly reduced recurrent ischaemic events:
    • 2.9% vs 3.8%

  • heparin treatment resulted in more haemorrhagic strokes:
    • 1.2% vs. 0.4%

  • 125000 IU bd resulted in significantly more transfused or fatal extracranial bleeds, more haemorrhagic strokes, and more deaths or non-fatal strokes within 14 days:
    • 12.6% vs 10.8%
