Enucleation of a pleomorphic adenoma is inadequate. Treatment is by wide excision of the tumour and surrounding tissue with careful preservation of the facial nerve. This may be followed by radiotherapy, especially in elderly patients. The treatment must be applied to all salivary glands involved.

Following excision, prognosis is good but inadequate surgery often is followed by recurrence.
