Indications for surgery

The indications for surgery in clinodactyly include:

  • interference with function, for example:
    • abutting neighbouring digit or crossing over of digits with palmar flexion
    • severe or multiple associated congenital hand anomalies eg syndactyly, polydactyly or macrodactyly
  • relentless progression despite splintage
  • deformity of digital axis of more than 50 degrees
  • failure of splintage and hand therapy

Generally, cosmesis is not an indication for surgical intervention. If possible, surgery is deferred until skeletal maturity is reached due to the possibility of recurrence.
