Management in children

Authoring team

Early diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss is essential as this allows rehabilitation to commence immediately.

Rehabilitation will often include the use of hearing aids which may be fitted as early as 6 months old. There is evidence to suggest that the earlier hearing aids are fitted, the more intelligible the child's speech will be. Arrangements for special schooling will also have to be made and the appropriate agencies informed.

Genetic counselling should be made available if the cause of hearing loss is genetic.
