Fluoride for osteoporosis

Fluoride should only be used in a specialist centre. It is not an established treatment.

Studies suggest that fluoride results in a redistribution of skeletal calcium because:

  • calcium balance is unaffected
  • vertebral bone density increases
  • hip density may decrease

There is concern that there is an increased incidence of hip fractures in patients taking fluoride.
