Investigations of suspected prolactinoma
The investigation of a suspected prolactinoma might include:
- prolactin level - at least two readings taken on separate occasions from an unstressed patient are necessary. A level greater than 5000 mu per litre is diagnostic.
- dynamic tests - TRH, domperidone and metoclopramide are useful when prolactin levels are moderately elevated
- MRI is preferable to CT
- assessment of pituitary function - low FSH/LH
