Investigations
These include:
- urinary sugar
- serum calcium
- 24 hour urine volume
- MSU
- urine and plasma osmolarity:
- a relatively concentrated urine suggests an osmotic diuresis e.g. diabetes mellitus
- a relatively dilute urine suggests lack of ADH action e.g. diabetes insipidus
- a urine osmolarity within 50 mmol/Kg of that of plasma suggests chronic renal failure
- water deprivation test
