Prognosis

Authoring team

Prognosis is dependent on the presence or absence of complications of hypertension e.g. cerebrovascular accident, renal impairment.

  • mortality from elective surgery - less than 2%; approximately 80% of patients become normotensive following surgery

  • 96% 5-year survival with benign disease

  • 44% 5-year survival with malignant disease

  • recurrence rate - less than 10%

Presence of complications, urinary dopamine and homovanillic acid indicate a poor prognosis.
