Hypomagnesaemia produces a similar picture to hypocalcaemia and may through it's effects on parathyroid hormone secretion and action, cause hypocalcaemia.

Typical features include:

  • tetany
  • muscle twitching
  • depression
  • irritability and aggression
  • convulsions
  • tachycardia and cardiac dysrhythmias:
    • ST segment depression
    • T wave inversion
    • prolonged QT interval
