prolonged vomiting
malabsorption
diarrhoea
fistulae e.g. Crohn's disease
Renal losses:
drug induced - cisplatin, gentamicin
renal disease - alcohol alters tubular mechanisms for reabsorption and increases production of metabolic intermediaries such as lactate which bind magnesium
