Aetiology
Reduced intake:
- prolonged parenteral nutrition with inadequate supplements
- anorexia nervosa / kwashiorkor
- alcholism
Increased gut loss:
- prolonged vomiting
- malabsorption
- diarrhoea
- fistulae e.g. Crohn's disease
Renal losses:
- drug induced - cisplatin, gentamicin
- renal disease - alcohol alters tubular mechanisms for reabsorption and increases production of metabolic intermediaries such as lactate which bind magnesium
