Important points in the history
The past history of the patient should detail:
- obstetric history
- relevant surgery e.g. thyroidectomy
- radiotherapy to e.g. thyroid or gonads
- drugs e.g. oral contraceptives
- childhood development
A family history may be informative:
- ask about autoimmune, endocrine or hypertensive disease
- determine the height, weight, body habitus, hair growth and age at puberty of other family members
Take a social history:
- alcohol and drug use must be discussed
- occupation is significant where exposure to chemicals or drugs is possible
- ask about diet e.g. salt, liquorice or iodine
