short-term use (1-3 months) - so to render patients euthyroid before definitive treatment e.g. with surgery or radio-iodine
long-term (12 to 24 months after the patients' thyrotoxicosis is controlled) - this may be used in the hope of the achieval of lasting remission in patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism
both propylthiouracil and carbimazole are ineffective in the treatment of thyroiditis
