Primary short stature may be caused by:

  • skeletal dysplasias
  • chromosomal abnormalities
  • inborn errors of metabolism
  • intrauterine growth retardation, by any aetiology
  • miscellaneous syndromes, including the Russell-Silver Rubenstein-Taybi and Aarsog's syndromes
  • some texts consider genetic short stature as an aetiology here
