Keloids can result in lifelong morbidity due to their unaesthetic appearance and occasionally, symptoms of pain and pruritus. At its extreme, this can hinder social interaction and trigger low self-esteem and moods. Formal referral to a psychologist with a specialist interest can be beneficial. Support groups may provide a useful resource to patients. In the United Kingdom, one national organisation that provides support and resources is Changing Faces which has a remit that focuses on disfigurement (www.changingfaces.org.uk).
