Petechiae are purpura of less than 1 cm diameter which may be caused by:

  • thrombocytopenia
  • platelet dysfunction
  • small vessel disease

Rarely, but not uncommonly, children can develop petechiae in a periorbital and sometimes superior vena caval distribution following bouts of vigourous coughing or vomiting.
